“Our quarterback got a little banged up,” Bishop Miege coach Tim Grunhard said. “A lot of our offense was taken away.”

McConniff suffered a sprained foot while running a quarterback sneak in a second-quarter scoring drive. Colin Mulvany’s 2-yard touchdown run ended that drive and gave Miege a 14-0 lead. After a Schlagle fumble, Andrew Cage scored from 14 yards out for Miege with less than 1 minute 30 seconds left in the first half.

McConniff played one series in the second half but could go no further. He finished the evening completing seven of 11 passes for 89 yards.

“He’ll be OK,” Grunhard said. “We just wanted to protect him.”

When second-team quarterback Kevin Pitz took over, Schlagle’s defense successfully focused on stopping the Stags’ running game, Grunhard said.

“Our defense, I think we kind of rocked them in the second half, to be honest with you,” Schlagle coach Steve Szczygiel said.

On offense, Schlagle engineered a 19-play, 90-yard scoring drive in the second half. Jimmie Williams’ 10-yard touchdown run made it 21-7 with 11:23 left in the game. Schlagle later drove as deep as the Miege 13, but a fumble by quarterback Tyrone Wallace ended that drive. Miege’s Kevin Davidson recovered the fumble with 2:03 left.

“We’re pretty close to being a pretty decent team,” Szczygiel said.

He said Schlagle’s second-half play did not surprise him.

“We have character kids,” he said. “I know our kids.”

The Miege home game took place at Rockhurst High School because of renovation work at Miege’s field.

Miege moved to 2-0 entering its game next week against Blue Valley, the defending Kansas 5A champion.

Schlagle dropped to 0-2.
