Lew Kasselman’s Bonner Springs football team had one of its best seasons in a while in 2007, finishing 8-2.
Kasselman though, takes no credit himself, and expects the winning to continue this season.
“We graduated 22 seniors who played hard, came together and saw success come from it,” Kasselman said. “That is the best example for the kids who we expect to step up this year.”
The team will look to a pair of identical twins, seniors Jeremy and Jonathan Walker, for leadership. Jeremy Walker (5-11, 210), is a returning receiver who is the 5A state champion in the 100 meters. Jonathan Walker (5-11, 205), led the team with 960 yards as a running back and was the 5A state champion in the 110-meter hurdles.
“Those boys bring a lot of speed offensively, and are key on defense, too,” Kasselman said.
The team also returns senior receiver Luke Terrell (6-2, 160) and another set of twins, juniors Jake and Max Barren. Jake Barren (6-1, 215), will be a force at center. Max Barren (5-9, 170) will be a presence as an outside linebacker.
“It is interesting to have two sets of twins on the roster,” Kasselman said. “Not many teams probably have that.”
Kasselman said he hopes that both sets of twins have big years, and that some of his players will develop quickly.
“We need some young kids to step up,” Kasselman said. “We have an opportunity to be very competitive if some kids come around. Our team is very quick and athletic.”
If Bonner Springs can find a quarterback and get its offensive line in check, it could be another big year for Kasselman.
Bonner Springs plays at Bishop Ward at 7 p.m. Friday.
