Blue Valley’s Luke Rampy (above) saw the ball knocked loose by BV Northwest’s Garrett Gaddy in the closing seconds, but P.J. DeBey (left at right) picked up the ball for a touchdown.

It took a Blue Valley fumble recovery for a touchdown with 6 seconds left to end Blue Valley Northwest’s improbable run through the Kansas 6A football playoffs.

Blue Valley sophomore P.J. DeBey recovered teammate Luke Rampy’s fumble in the back of the end zone, capping a 42-yard touchdown play on fourth down and giving the Tigers a 24-20 quarterfinal victory Friday at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex.

Blue Valley, 10-1, advanced to a state semifinal game next Friday. BV Northwest, which started the year 0-7, ended 3-8.

Another BV Northwest playoff upset was in sight after the Huskies scored a touchdown with 1 minute, 55 seconds remaining.

BV Northwest receiver Matt Ornduff tipped a pass from quarterback Mike Petersen, and sophomore Ryan Luzenske caught the deflection in the end zone for an 11-yard score.

Although Blue Valley blocked the extra-point attempt, BV Northwest held a 20-17 lead.

“When we scored that touchdown, it seemed like we had a little luck on our side,” BV Northwest coach Mike Zegunis said. “It’s too bad it seemed like we had the same thing done to us at the end of the game.”

Blue Valley drove inside BV Northwest territory but faced fourth down and 22 yards to go with 16 seconds left.

As BV Northwest fans chanted, “Yes, we can,” Blue Valley quarterback Anthony Abenoja lofted a pass to Rampy in the middle of the field and inside the 10-yard line.

Rampy said he caught the ball and took a couple of steps. He added teammates told him he fumbled on the 1.

“I think I got hit from behind, and the ball just popped out,” he said.

BV Northwest fans yelled for a ruling of incomplete pass.

“It was a clean catch,” DeBey said.

DeBey fell on the ball just before it rolled out of the end zone.

“It was dang close, dang close,” he said.

Rampy finished the game with seven receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown. Abenoja completed 18 of 32 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

BV Northwest’s Petersen was 12 of 23 for 157 yards.

“I think this was a game where nobody deserved to lose,” Zegunis said.

Blue Valley rolled to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, but BV Northwest tied it 14-14 at halftime.

What a bag job! Watch the video. That pass was INCOMPLETE! I see it every Sunday. You need to control the ball to the ground or make a football move. He took one step and the ball was knocked loose. To make matters worse, by the time the "fumble" was recovered in the end zone, the kid was out of bounds. BVNW deserved better.....

And how many games have you refereed? I bet that you were at least 100-200 ft from the action, so you really had a great view of the play. Why don't you become a footbal ref, you are just like so many other fans, totally clueless about wwhat happens on the field.
