Lee’s Summit/Southland fans, did you think we had forgotten about you? Don’t worry we didn’t. Here’s a little extra information about teams from your area. If you have any good story ideas, ideas for something post on here about or just want to tell me how great your team is, send me an e-mail at ceyoung@kcstar.com.
Where have all the running teams gone?
A quick look at the Varsity Zone’s leader board shows that three of the top six passers in the city are from the Lee’s Summit/Southland area, at least based on passing yards.
Andrew Schnell from Lee’s Summit, Michael Chouinard of Cass Midway and Harrisonville’s Sean Ransburg rank 3,5 and 6 in the list of quarterbacks with the most yards.
What might be the most impressive about all three of the players is the fact that they all have 50 percent or better completion percentages. In high school that’s not always the easiest thing to do.
Those three players are just a sampling of quarterbacks who have been called on to throw the ball around a lot more.
There have been others.
Raymore-Peculiar is throwing more. Who knows how much they wanted to throw last season, but with Derrick Washington in the backfield, coach Tom Kruse knew what was in the teams’ best interest.
Belton has thrown the ball plenty this season. With running back Ben Pritchett out with an injury, quarterback Zach Rasmussen is being called on to light the fire for the Pirate offense.
It doesn’t seem that long ago that every team from Midway to Lee’s Summit West had a 1,000- yard rusher.
This season instead of all 1,000-yard rushers could we be talking about 2,500-yard passers?
The Titans have beaten Kearney the last two times they played. Unless something crazy happens in the final half of the season, this game is for the Suburban Small 6 title.
If that game’s not to your liking, try Harrisonville at Grandview.
I know Grandview is only 2-3. I know Harrisonville has won more than 30 straight games, but consider the following. Grandview hasn’t gotten blown out by anyone. They’ve beaten Park Hill South and were leading Fort Osage at halftime.
It’s an interesting matchup of a Class 3 and Class 5 team.
Both games are at 7 p.m. Friday.
