The Shawnee Mission South girls bowling team set a school record Wednesday.
The Raiders bowled a 2,087 – the highest three-game pin count in the team’s four-year history – in defeating St. Thomas Aquinas and Gardner Edgerton in competition at Mission Bowl in Olathe.
In fact, it was the second meet in a row that the SM South girls topped 2,000 pins.
“We’re very encouraged by that,” Raiders coach Kent Thompson said.
They should be. The SM South girls have a 10-2 record after their big day Wednesday.
Junior Katie Constant, who placed 18th at the Kansas 6A state tournament last year, has been the team’s leader. She rolled the high series among girls from the three competing teams Wednesday with a 616.
Sophomore Shelby Byrnes has also emerged as a key contributor for the Raiders and one of the team’s most improved bowlers. It was just last season, during tryouts, that Byrnes was bowling in the 90s, Thompson said. Now she’s pushed her average to around 170.
“She’s just kind of a natural at it,” Thompson said.
•MIEGE THIRD: The Bishop Miege Invitational was last weekend. Topeka High won the girls tournament, while the Topeka West boys claimed first.
The Bishop Miege boys were the top Johnson County finisher, placing third. The Stags were led by Kyle Rosberg, who rolled a 698 series in finishing second behind Topeka West’s Andrew Bennett (726).
