The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls bowling team is crafting quite a success story this season.

After posting a 6-29 record over the last two seasons, the SM Northwest girls were 11-4 this year, as of Thursday.

“We’re bowling better than we ever have in Northwest history,” Cougars coach Britton Haney said.

When Kelly Cole joined the team as a sophomore, she was averaging 113 a game, Haney said.

Now a senior, Cole is among the team’s leaders, averaging around 180.

Sophomore Janie Queral, the team’s lone state qualifier last year, is averaging a little over 180. And junior Laura Highland has raised her average close to 165.

“It’s just been a lot of fun watching the girls do well,” Haney said. “Everybody’s gotten a little older and a little smarter. The girls know what to do.”

Miege boys develop into solid teamWhen this season began, Bishop Miege bowling coach Matt Eshelbrenner figured senior Rick Turner was going to be a steady contributor for the boys team. And he has been.

Eshelbrenner thought junior Kyle Rosberg had the potential to be one of the team’s better bowlers. And he has been.

And sophomore Anthony Mitchell … well, he’s been something of a pleasant surprise.

“We’ve got a pretty solid core,” Eshelbrenner said.

Turner is averaging around 185 a game this season, while Rosberg and Mitchell both have averages around 180.

Their success so far has Eshelbrenner thinking the Stags may have a shot at qualifying for the state tournament.

“I’m looking forward to regionals getting here and seeing what we can do,” he said.
