The Sunflower League bowling championships are today, and there doesn’t seem to be any consensus on which teams will come out on top.

The Shawnee Mission West boys have had four different individuals roll 700 series this season, so they’re certainly a team to watch. A couple of coaches mentioned the Olathe North teams as ones to watch. But the competition seems pretty wide open.

“I think it’s going to be whoever shows up that day because there have been a lot of strong teams,” SM West coach Renee Stevens said. “It just depends on who shows up.”

A team effortKeeping in line with that theme, the Shawnee Mission North boys have flashed some strong potential this season on those days when all six of their bowlers are in a groove.

“When they’re on, it’s pretty exciting,” SM North coach Sarah Derks said. “But it’s just a matter of all six of them being in sync.”

The team is led by a pretty stable top three of Evan Bibbs, Michael Kozak and Austin Fowler, all seniors. All three average in the 190s, and Bibbs has a 774 series (and 299 game) to his credit this season.

The team has also developed some depth in its lineup as the season has progressed. But, as with most bowling teams, it’s a matter of putting it all together at the same time.
