The Shawnee Mission East boys swimming and diving team finally ceded the state championship trophy on Saturday.

The Lancers impressive streak ends with four consecutive state titles, from 2005 through 2008. And it’s not like they receded very far out of view this year.

SM East posted a solid third-place state finish, scoring 262 points and finishing behind state champion Olathe East and 12 points back of runner-up Blue Valley North.

Senior Spencer Sherard placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle; junior Hunter Stevenson took fifth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle; Andrew Watkins, a sophomore, finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke; Clay Finley, a junior, was seventh in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle; junior Jack Walker was seventh in the 200 freestyle; sophomore Peter Frazell placed seventh in diving; and senior John Hart claimed eighth in the 200 individual medley.

All three Lancers relays placed in the top four – highlighted by a state championship-winning swim by the 200 freestyle relay of senior Jon Reene, Finley, Stevenson and Sherard. The won by more than two seconds, in a time of 1 minute, 27.23 seconds.

•Shawnee Mission North junior Luke Calkins placed third in diving for the second season in a row. With state champion Clark Thomas, of Olathe Northwest, merely a freshman, those two should go head to head next season.

•St. Thomas Aquinas’ 200 freestyle relay of senior James Bono, senior Danny Pruett, junior Phil Grosdidier and senior Jacob Gremillion finished in eighth place.

•And Shawnee Mission Northwest has reason for optimism after placing tied for 19th overall with a team that returns all but two of its state swimmers next season.
