The Shawnee Mission South boys were the surprise of the Sunflower League bowling tournament last weekend.
The Raiders had a 5-10 regular season record. They had struggled to find consistency from game to game. But not Saturday.
Facing a competitive field at AMF West Lanes, SM South showcased its best, rolling a program-best 2,411 and winning its first ever league bowling championship.
“We just kind of came out nowhere on Saturday,” SM South coach Kent Thompson said.
Olathe Northwest won the girls championship with a 2,046 team series. SM North’s Austin Fowler was the boys individual league champion with a 648 series, and SM South’s Katie Constant won the girls tournament with a 603.
The Raiders’ boys team, meanwhile, finally reached its quest for a 2,400 series.
Junior Zach Donovan led the Raiders with a seventh-place finish and 626 series. Junior Henry Haake was ninth with a 617. Seniors Jerrod Reddick (597) and Mike Gunnoe (571) rounded out the team’s scoring.
“We were ecstatic,” Thompson said. “The kids were very fired up about it – everybody, girls, boys, parents, we were all excited about it.”
SM East’s John Kurtz was the boys runner-up by one pin with a 647, while the Lancers’ boys team took second with a 2,368. Lawrence (1,980) was second in the girls tournament.
