WICHITA | Shawnee Mission West senior Jarad Sanches made the most of his first appearance at the 6A state wrestling tournament.
Sanches made it all the way to the semifinals of the 189-pound bracket before he was pinned by Goddard senior Boaz Beard, the eventual champion. But Sanches didn’t stop there, edging out Derby junior Cole Carpenter 8-5 in the third-place match.
Sanches and his brother, Josh, were the only placers for Shawnee Mission West, which finished 16th with a team score of 42 points. Josh took fourth at 215 pounds.
Afterward, Jarad was satisfied with his performance.
“I just tried to go out there and leave it all on the mat,” Sanches said.
However, SM West coach Alex Red Corn said the brothers deserved credit for stepping up as seniors.
“(Jarad) came here and wasn’t awestruck by the entire thing,” Red Corn said. “Both of them pulled through the backside of the bracket against some quality opponents.”
•St. James sophomore Ryne Cokeley is well on his way to achieving his goal of being a four-time state champion.
Cokeley successfully defended his crown on Saturday at the 4A state wrestling tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center. He pinned Courtney Strauss of Abilene in the finals of the 130-pound weight class.
But Cokeley wasn’t the only St. James wrestler to become a champion. Sophomore Taylor Moeder became the second wrestler in school history to win a state title when he beat Baldwin senior Alan Callahan 7-0 in the 112-pound finals.
The win capped a terrific state performance for Moeder, who allowed only one point to be scored at him at state – and that was a technical violation for not having his mouthpiece in.
•Mill Valley junior Trevor Boyer could hardly restrain his emotion on Saturday.
Moments after he became the first state champion in Mill Valley wrestling history, Boyer was surrounded by his coaches and grinning widely.
“This was everything I’ve been working for,” said Boyer, who beat Tim Prescott of McPherson 9-2 in the 112-pound final of the 5A state tournament
•Shawnee Mission Northwest sophomore Ross Whitmore finished sixth at 125 pounds for the Cougars, who took 21st in the 6A team competition with a score of 24.5 points.
