Metro Classic: Blue Springs wrestler wins battle of state champions

Blue Springs senior Luke Greco failed to read everything in the program about his wrestling opponent in the 17th annual U.S. Army Metro Classic Wrestling Dual on Wednesday at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

The 125-pound match pitted Greco, a Missouri Class 4 state champion, against Olathe South’s Chaz Lawrence, a Kansas Class 6A state champion. The program said Lawrence holds Kansas high school wrestling records for career takedowns (569) and season takedowns (329).

“It’s probably better that I didn’t read it,” Greco said.

Lawrence got zero takedowns against Greco, who won the match 1-0.

The only point came when Lawrence allowed Greco to escape at the beginning of the second period.

“I was kind of surprised,” Greco said. “I thought he’d at least be a little more of a rider.”

Lawrence still had the second and third periods to go for takedowns, but Greco’s defensive style held him off.

“I don’t score many points, but I win,” said Greco, who went 47-4 during his senior year.

Greco said he plans to wrestle in college.

He is interested in Baker, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Central Missouri and Missouri.
