Bishop Miege High School’s boys basketball coach Rick Zych wasn’t about to let a small thing like a lack of seniors interfere with the annual visit to Miege by the University of Kansas men’s basketball team.
In past years, the Jayhawks’ departing seniors have formed a barnstorming team and toured various Kansas high schools. Last season, outgoing players such as Russell Robinson and Sasha Kaun visited Miege, signed autographs and played against high school seniors.
But with this year’s Jayhawks team being uncharacteristically young, Zych needed to find an alternative.
His solution?
A one-day basketball clinic for boys and girls in grades 1-8 called “Hoops with the Stars.”
Zych said the clinic, which will take place on May 30, will allow kids to receive instruction from all Miege coaches and men’s and women’s players from area colleges, including Washburn, UMKC, Baker, Pittsburg State and NW Missouri State.
The headliners, Zych said, will be current Kansas players such as former Miege star Travis Releford — though Zych can’t mention any others by name because of NCAA rules.
“Travis will be there and so will some of his current KU teammates,” Zych said. “It will be based on availability of the players.”
The cost is $50 per camper, and each camper will receive a t-shirt and a program. There is no deadline for registration, but Zych said the cutoff point will probably be around 100 kids. For more information, call Zych at 913-262-2700.
