This season, the Excelsior Springs boys tennis team propelled the program to new heights. The Tigers enjoyed an undefeated regular season, but they have set out with more significant goals than simply winning dual matches.
Before advancing to the Missouri Class 1 team regional tournament on Tuesday, they made plans on returning to Springfield for the team state tournament next week as an older and better-equipped challenger.
“We’re looking to continue the step. We want to return,” coach A.W. Michael said. “Last year was the first time we ever took a team to state. We had an eye-opener.”
Excelsior Springs ran into two St. Louis-area teams – Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS) and Clayton – did not win a game in either match and finished fourth. But with five players seasoned by that experience, Michael believes the Tigers can make another run.
“What’s been fortunate for us, everybody has come back,” Michael said. “We’re hoping with this year, another year of competition under our belts, we’re looking to get to state again.”
