Joe Stephens •SCHOOL: Paola

•YEAR: Senior

•SPORT: Track and field

Stephens capped his career with another great performance at the Kansas 4A state track meet. Stephens won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.83 seconds and finished second in the long jump, triple jump and 110 hurdles in leading Paola to the boys state team title. Stephens has won 12 medals combined at state the last three years and has four first-place finishes to his credit. “He’s gotten a lot of points for us over the years,” said Paola coach Mike Smith.

Breeana Coleman •SCHOOL: Olathe East

•YEAR: Junior

•SPORT: Track and field

Coleman was terrific for Olathe East on Saturday at the Kansas 6A state track meet. The Hawks won the state team title for the second year in a row, thanks in large part to the Herculean effort of Coleman, who won the 100-meter dash in 12.03 seconds, the 200 in 24.93 and 100 hurdles in 14.30 and also ran the anchor leg of the Eagles’ second-place 400 relay team. “She ended up with three gold medals, so I’d say that’s a pretty good day,” said Olathe East coach Mike Wallace.
