Football Scores
Michael McGee walked back inside the doors of Rockhurst on Tuesday, a little sunburned from playing a full round of golf but ready for his close up in a full suit and tie.
McGee wasn’t expecting such a homecoming this soon after graduating. But as the Kenneth Smith Award winner, given to the area’s top male golfer, he returned to Rockhurst to accept the honor in front of family and friends.
“I had a lot more practice on the first tee than doing speeches,” McGee joked. McGee, who last spring tied as the individual state champion at the Missouri Class 4 golf tournament, competedin the Missouri (MGA) Amateur Championship in St. Joseph on Tuesday. After shooting par in his first round of play, McGee raced back to Kansas City to take part in the Kenneth Smith ceremony.
McGee, who will play at Indiana, becomes the third Rockhurst golfer to win the award, which is annually given to the most outstanding performer in the boys’ spring season and girls’ fall season.
“That’s quite a feat considering all the good golfers who come through here,” Hawklets coach Michael O’Leary said.
According to O’Leary, McGee’s senior season average of 73.7 was the lowest score in the program that he could remember. McGee was a three-time all-state golfer who became only the third Hawklet to place as the state medalist.
