Picking the 2009 Olathe News Girls Soccer Player of the Year wasn’t a tough task.

Claire Nicholson, after all, was a record-setting forward on the city’s best team — an Olathe East club that steamrolled through the Sunflower League and was unbeaten until the state championship game.

The junior striker found the back of the net 38 times.

Her speed and on-ball skills made her a handful for every team the Hawks faced.

Despite opposing defenses often building a strategy around choking off Nicholson’s dangerous runs, she still had 12 multiple-goal games, including a career-high five May 12 against Olathe North.

Nicholson had six hat tricks or better on the season and scored in 17 of East’s 21 games.

Teamed with sophomore Kaitlyn Atkins, who led the Hawks with 22 assists (mostly to Nicholson), Nicholson was half of the state’s most dynamic and dangerous goal-scoring tandem.

And here’s a thought that should make opposing soccer coaches cringe — Nicholson will be back for one more spring.
