HIGH SCHOOL: OLATHE AREA SOCCER NOTES

EAST STAYS PERFECTJustin Hershey tripled his goal total for the season and Ben Coyle added his team-leading sixth tally Thursday as Olathe East blasted Shawnee Mission West 3-0 at SM South District Stadium.

Hershey, a senior, had goals in the first and second halves, giving him three for the season now, while Coyle, another senior, added the final goal.

Senior goalkeeper Dustin Derks recorded his first shutout of the season.

The Hawks, 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Sunflower League, had allowed one goal in each of the previous five games.

EAGLES TIE LAWRENCEOlathe North had trouble containing Lawrence’s Daouda Drame early on. The Eagles’ boys soccer squad quickly grabbed a one-goal lead when sophomore Skylar Gonzales scored in the opening 15 minutes, but Drame tied it six minutes later.

And that’s how it remained as North drew 1-1 on the road Thursday. North is now 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Sunflower League.

SOUTH STOPS SKIDOlathe South snapped a two-game losing streak and ended Blue Valley Northwest’s five-game win streak Wednesday with a 2-1 win at the BV District Activity Center.

Senior Brad Barclay scored two first-half goals 5 minutes, 18 seconds apart inside the final 12 minutes before halftime for the Falcons, who improved to 4-2. BVNW got one back in the opening two minutes of the second half, but South held on for the 2-1 win.

COYLE LIFTS HAWKSBack to health after breaking a kneecap last season, Olathe East senior Ben Coyle added two more goals Tuesday, including the game-winner with just over 5 minutes remaining, as the Hawks remained perfect with a 2-1 win against Shawnee Mission East at the SM District Soccer Complex.

Coyle, who now has five goals this season, finished off a furious scrum in the Lancers’ box during the 13th minute for the game’s first goal.

But SM East tied the game 13 minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Lucas Throckmorton rolled the equalizer under Derks.

With time running down, though, Coyle came to the rescue, deflecting a shot by teammate Andy Griffin into the net for a 75th-minute goal.

BRENTANO, BUSH LEAD ONWComing off a 10-day layoff following a sixth-place finish at the Olathe Soccer Tournament, Olathe Northwest showed remarkable improvement in its Sunflower League opener Tuesday at the Shawnee Mission District Soccer Complex.

Drawing SM Northwest, the reigning league champs, the Ravens snuck past the Cougars 1-0 and now stand 2-2 this season.

Sophomore Alec Brentano’s 22nd-minute goal, his first as a varsity player, was the difference.

The other factor in ONW’s stunner was strong play in goal from junior Danny Bush, who unexpectedly played all 80 minutes for his first career shutout.

SOUTH FALLS TO AQUINASA dismal first half proved too much for Olathe South’s boys soccer team to overcome Sept. 8 against St. Thomas Aquinas at the College Boulevard Activity Center.

Junior midfielder Kyle Whigham netted two goals, putting the Falcons down 2-0 at halftime.

Senior Trey Bristow powered a second-half rally, assisting on a goal by Tim DeSanto and later adding the equalizer off a feed from Ryan Hill, but the Falcons couldn’t sustain the momentum in overtime.

The Saints won 3-2 in double overtime when senior Jordan Zarse booted home the game-winner.
