BOYS SOCCER: Aquinas eyes undefeated season

St. Thomas Aquinas has won six consecutive boys soccer state championships and has been the state’s premier program for many years.

But not since 1994 — and only that year — have the Saints finished a season undefeated, coach Craig Ewing said.

“I think it’s very unusual for a team not to lose during the season,” he said.

So it’s time to start paying special attention to this Aquinas squad. The Saints took first place last weekend at an elite national tournament in Illinois, shutting out all three of their opponents, and are now 13-0 despite a grueling schedule.

Junior center midfielder Kyle Whigham scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Quincy (Ill.) in the championship match of that tournament. He and senior centerback George Skevington shared tournament MVP honors, while the Saints cleared another huge hurdle toward an unbeaten season.

But the next challenge is right around the corner — and it doesn’t get any easier. Aquinas travels to play at undefeated Washburn Rural on Tuesday. The teams are ranked 1-2 in the state, respectively.
