Sure, Krysa and the offense operated like a well-oiled machine in the Indians’ 30-0 victory over Raytown South in a Missouri Class 5 sectional game on Friday night at Raytown. But perhaps even more impressive than Krysa’s 141 rushing yards in 37 carries, the Fort Osage defense completed its second straight shutout.
Fort Osage, 10-1, won its first playoff game in school history and advanced to the state semifinals, where the Indians will play at 7 p.m. next Friday at Belton.
On Nov. 2, the Indians clinched their district with a 7-0 victory at home over Park Hill.
“We’re playing great defense and at the right time,” Fort Osage coach Ryan Schartz said of his defense, which actually has played its last nine quarters without being scored on dating to a 35-21 win over St. Joseph Central two weeks ago.
“I’ve got to give credit to our defensive players and coaching staff for coming up with a great game plan and executing it.”
Really, Raytown South, despite sporting some speed in the backfield and especially wide receiver DeJuan Beard, never came close to threatening the Fort Osage end zone. The Cardinals’ biggest play came on a 34-yard pass completion to Beard in the third quarter. But that was it.
“We just swarm to the ball, and we have good speed in the defense,” said Indians senior linebacker Phillip Waltman. “Everybody does their jobs and keeps their heads.”
Fort Osage got on the scoreboard through some help from the Cardinals. With the Cardinals pinned back at their 1-yard line and facing fourth down, punter Derek Blevins lined up at the back of the end zone, inches from the back out-of-bounds line. The snap to Blevins was high, and his foot touched the line for a safety.
Krysa ran the ensuing free kick back 44 yards to the Cardinals’ 28, and five plays later, Krysa ran it in from the 11, putting Fort Osage up 9-0.
The rest of the first half was an Indians clinic in ball-control offense.
Early in the second quarter, behind Krysa’s running, the Indians put together a 13-play, 51-yard drive that was capped by Krysa’s 8-yard touchdown run.
Later in the quarter, the Indians went that two plays and 28 yards better, marching 79 yards in 15 plays and scoring on Krysa’s 5-yard run with 32 seconds left in the half.
The only score of the second half was a 1-yard Krysa run with 8 minutes, 47 seconds left in the third quarter.
In week one of the regular season, Fort Osage beat Raytown South at Raytown. In week two, the Indians won at Belton, the very place and team they face next.
“It’s like déjÀ vu, only with a little less sunlight,” Schartz said.
