James Cox came up huge after halftime Saturday — and that meant a big victory for Bishop Ward.
Cox scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half, leading the Cyclones’ rally in a 64-54 overtime victory over St. James Academy in the Class 4A substate championship game at Spring Hill.
Bishop Ward, which trailed most of the game, rallied late and pulled ahead 44-43 in the fourth quarter. St. James held a 51-49 lead in the final seconds, but Cox nailed a field-goal and sent the game into overtime.
The Cyclones grabbed the momentum early in overtime and eventually pulled away with strong free-throw shooting late in the game.
“Neither team wanted to lose this,” said Bishop Ward coach Bill Buser, whose team improved to 15-7. “Our seniors just took control of the game, and that’s what seniors do.”
St. James, a team of all underclassmen, led 28-20 at halftime.
St. James, 18-4, was led by Joe Kelling with 16 points.
Combardino scored 20 points in leading the 21-1 Bobcats into the state championship tournament.
Eudora finished the season at 18-4.
