Ottens had a banner day at the Kansas 5A-1A state bowling tournament last Saturday in Topeka. She won the girls individual state championship and led Sumner to its second consecutive girls team championship. Ottens’ 645 three-game series gave her a six-pin lead over the next closest competitor, while leading Sumner to a late comeback and the team title.

•SPORT: Bowling

Washford earned a measure of personal redemption last Saturday in Wichita by winning the Kansas 6A boys bowling state championship. A year ago, Washford entered state with high expectations only to finish with one of his lowest scores of the season. This time, he brought his best. Washford’s 752 three-game series was his personal best and gave him a 14-pin lead over the next closest competitor.
