The Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints girls basketball team continued their fantastic season with a 27-24 victory over Gardner Edgerton at Edgerton, giving Aquinas the substate championship for the 15th year in a row.

That is kind of impressive.

Aquinas fans did a great job tonight, giving the girls their biggest crowd at an away game all year. They cheered loudly, and at times bent rule 52, but not in an extremely mean way. It was, in fact, a very clever cheer.

Although the game was close throughout, the Saints controlled the game throughout. The play of the game was at the end of the third quarter. Aquinas missed a 3 pointer with the clock approaching zeroes. But junior forward Melanie Siscos was there for the rebound and got a layup as time expired. And one. A three point play at the end of the quarter gave Aquinas breathing room at 20-13.

Edgerton made a run, but the Saints stayed calm and composed, even though they only had two healthy juniors, Siscos and forward Beth DeMars, along with another junior, guard Abby Willis, who got hit in the eye early in the game. But she soldiered on. +1 for her. Also, props to Doctor Kwapiszeski, for his work on Abby's eye, and his work on Siscos' eye earlier this year. And thanks to whoever gave Willis a spare contact.

Sophomore guard DaShawn Harden led the Saints in scoring, with 11, and Siscos added 7, including many clutch free throws.

Edgerton struggled with their free throws throughout the game, and the Saints defense prevented them from ever getting a rhythm on offense. Time after time, Siscos and sophomore forward Katie Brown came up with a big rebound after a Gardner shot, preventing any second or third chance opportunities, despite being surrounded by a swarm of Gardner players.

Congratulations to the girls team on an exciting victory and another substate championship. Good luck at state.
