It was Aquinas-Washburn Rural in a huge fixture last night as the regular season began to wind down. Aquinas was #1 in 5A, and #1 overall in the state. Washburn was #1 in 6A, and #2 overall. Aquinas' coach Craig Ewing told me last week that he was worried about this game.
And when the varsity/JV team arrived for the JV game yesterday, it started raining. Not a light rain. It was a steady rain, starting off steady but lightly but then pounding harder and harder. After the game, Aquinas goalie, Kyle Gress, told me he played in 3 pairs of pants, 3 layers of Under Armour, and 2 goalie jerseys. And we was still cold. Rain froze on his eyelids.
Basically, hell literally froze over.
The JV was able to get a 1-0 result with a goal from Ben Conde and stellar net minding from KG, but the turf field was already done for. JV players were slipping on it even during the first few minutes of the game. And I will not lie to you, I spent most of the 2nd half of the jv game in the bathroom, where it was warm, drying off as much as I could. I stuck paper towels in me shoes, around my socks, and around my feet. And many other parents had the same idea.
