It was a rough game for Saint Thomas Aquinas today.  For the first Aquinas state championship game appearance there was snow and a continuous downpour.  This made the preferred pass plays more difficult and could have been responsible for a number of fumbles and interceptions by both teams.  The ending score: an upsetting 38-0 loss to the defending 6-A state champion Hutchinson Salthawks.

After the school's first sub-state win, which occurred last week, the students and athletes have been excited all week.  Celebrations on Friday night after the game turned into a pep-rally Tuesday afternoon to send off our Saints.  The articles in the Kansas City Star got better each day profiling the Bourquin twins and all the players that had fathers or uncles that played in the state championship 32 years ago.  After Thanksgiving and a week of practices, the team headed to the game today.

Their busses were cheered for when they passed the six spirit busses that held the band, dance team, cheerleaders and loyal fans.  For a school whose fan base has been criticized in the past, we showed up in force today.  There was a successful tailgate hosted by the football parents in the parking lot at the Emporia stadium.  Everyone came out excited. State University

It may sound cliché, but it was a great season Saints, no matter the ending score.  This team will go down in school history as the first team in the school's 20 years that has made the finals and we had a school win record along the way with only two losses all season.

The football team now joins the rafters at Aquinas with their runner-up title at state.  They fill out the nearly perfect fall season with wins by the first Girls Tennis team title, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Girls Golf and Boys Soccer, and the runner-up finish by the volleyball team.

Great Season Saints! Love, kgier.

And good job by the Saints to run and pass the ball. I feel so bad for the hutch wide receivers. they were not thrown to once the whole game. Talk about an extremely oppressing coach-he does not even include his receivers in the game. how sad that the coach does not have the confidence to throw the ball to his receivers.

First off gcalvert, your comment is totally irrelavent. Hutch ran the ball 72 times for 493 yards and pounded it down STA's throat. They didn't even need to pass, and I find it funny you point that out as a Hutch flaw...because it is totally worthless point on your behalf. Secondly, I find it hilarious that STA got smoked after getting so much hype for this one. Did you guys seriously think you would beat Hutch? Really? At least the last four team's to lose to Hutch for the 6A titles put up good fights. In 2004 Olathe South was close until the second half, Olathe East lost in 2005 by too many untimely turnovers, SM West was six yards from tieing Hutch and going into OT in 2006, and last year Olathe South kept it close until the half. Meanwhile, STA just got blitzkrieged today, from the start. Great season STA...well considering every other good team in East Kansas was in 6A this year. Gardner-Edgerton was okay, but still a year or so from dominance. But its fine STA! You guys can keep taking the title as best 5A team in East Kansas, as well as the poundings in the title game vs. Hutch. Nachbar, Bourquin brothers...come on. The two legit teams STA played this year (Blue Valley and Hutch) exposed Aquinas. I guess it just goes to prove than even for $7,000 dollars per year (STA tuition) you can't buy football championships. Kgier can go on all day about country club championships, but people don't remember who wins those championships in future years. Football is the one sport in Kansas that remains regarded higher than the rest. And the 'Aints won't be getting one of those championships anytime soon :)

woah, buddy, calm down. A) i was making an obvious sarcastic remark about their lack of passing. B) very nice use of the word blitzkreig (im not being sarcastic, even if you think i am). C) scoreboard reads 5 state titles for us, plus two runner ups so far this year. i'll take it

hey gcalvert welcome to what it feels like being a Gardner Blazers Fan, we have been run through the mud no matter what league, classification, or opponet that we play. Get used to it. One reason is that STA students, fans, and parents bost about how GOOD they are and the fact that you finally got put into your place. STA bad mouthed and put down the GE Football team so bad this year that Hutch had to be the ones to put you in your place. I am not taking anything away from STA they have many creditentials and a good record to back themselfs up with but maybe. . just maybe you guys will learn to keep the mouths shut untill the final buzzer. You had it coming i just wish it would of happened a week eariler, I congratulated your football team and coaches after the gardner win even as bad as it hurt but Hutch did what Gardner should of done and what BV already did, maybe this is a wake up call for STA. For a private school and a school that prides its self on sportsmanship, good character, and Catholisism maybe next year you will better represent yourselfs. Blazer Football will be here next year and many more to come.

First off congratulations to Hutch five in a row is great. but for Jakabones yes Aquinas is one of two good 5a teams in east kansas but you cant knock Aquinas who now play in an all 6a league. not too mention that aquinas beat the defending 5a state champions from last year (Blue Valley West) yes they lost to Blue Valley and that was a reality check. and for the GE matchup. i cant say anything bad about GE they are gonna be a great teamfor years to come but aquinas has not one but two wins against them one at home and one away so so STA some respect but all the glory goes to Hutch.

kathleen you left out tje state champion tennis team. no matter how much everyone wants to rip on STA and say things like football is all that matters, no one can deny that winning 5 state titles and 2 runner-ups all in one season in amazing. That isn't going to be repeated anytime soon
