The Saints started on a 10-0 run, but were defeated by a late game come back from the Blue Valley North Mustangs.  The Mustangs were led by the season high tying, 21 point effort from Junior Weston Ehlers.  The Saints were led by the Bourquin brothers, Beau and Zach who scored 14 and 12 respectively.

Aquinas came out to play with Zach Bourquin scoring two field goals, followed by a 3-pointer from Alex Keith and another three from Tommy Harrison.   Aquinas led for most of the game before the fourth quarter. 

Where the Mustangs tied up the game and took the lead with a three-pointer from Ehlers, one of his 7.  He played well and the Mustangs over-all kept their composure and did what it took to win.  Though their record is 6-6, they put up quite a fight.

In the last few possessions, the play was sloppy and there were a lot of fouls.  After Ehlers made his basket which gave the Mustangs their first lead, the Saints tried to foul to get the ball back.  With that the lead spread to five with around nine seconds left and the game was over. 

The teams were well matched with most of the players listed around or under 6-4.  BVN was able to make perimeter shots, knocking down 11 3-pointers.   The Saints played well in the lane, but came up short when the game was on the line.

One sweet STA moment though: a monster block from Beau Bourquin in the first quarter which drew deserving “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd.

It was an excellent match-up in a strong Eastern Kansas League conference.  The teams meet again on February 20 at BVN.  The next game for Aquinas however is the big rivalry game at Miege on Tuesday, where the undefeated Stags are being led by Trevor Releford and Rodney Givens who broke out with a 35 point performance against BVNW last night.
