Basehor-Linwood cooked up a 72-65 upset of Piper, The Star’s No. 1 small-class boys team, on Friday by using a formula of good outside shooting late and free-throw line efficiency.

After battling to a 31-31 halftime tie, Basehor-Linwood took control in the third quarter by getting the ball inside to 6-6 senior Ben Johnson. He had seven of his 11 points in the period.

But the Bobcats’ 44-39 lead only hinted at the hectic play that would mark the fourth quarter, when the teams combined to score 54 points.

Basehor-Linwood kept the lead with two pivotal three-point shots.

Chase Younger connected on a three from the right wing with 2:52 left to move the margin to 55-50. Then at the 2:30 mark, reserve Zach McNabb also hit a three from the right wing to make it 58-51.

The Bobcats were deadly from the free throw line, hitting 14-of-16 in the fourth quarter and 30-of-33 for the game. They were 12-of-14 in the last two minutes of the game.

The Pirates on the other hand were just 15-of-24 from the charity stripe. They also hurt themselves by turning the ball over 18 times.

Basehor-Linwood had four players in double figures, led by Younger with 26 points. He was eight-of-eight at the free throw line and pulled down four rebounds.

Junior Tim Sanders had 13 points, but spent a lot of time on the bench in the first half after picking up his fourth foul with 5:18 left in the second quarter.

Johnson added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior JP Downing was the fourth Bobcats in double figures with 10.

Luke Long, a 5-9 junior, paced the Pirates with 18 points, and junior Dominique Jennings had 10 tallies.

The victory improved the Bobcats to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in league play, while the Pirates fell to 11-4 and 6-3.
