Lee’s Summit West and Pleasant Hill will play for high school volleyball state championships today after advancing from round-robin play on Friday.
That’s the good news.
That bad news, though, is both teams are scheduled to face teams they already lost to Friday.
Lee’s Summit West will meet undefeated Lafayette (Wildwood) at 7:30 tonight in the Class 4 finals at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Titans, 35-5, lost to Lafayette during pool play Friday in straight sets (25-22, 25-16) but bounced back to defeat Francis Howell and get the second spot in the championship match.
“We came out really well against Lafayette, and then we gave away way too many points,” Titans coach Lori Hanaway said. “… We said coming in that Friday was all about getting to the championship match. We did that, so I’m proud of that.”
Pleasant Hill took a similar path to the Class 3 finals, where it will take on Westminster Christian Academy at 6 p.m.
After losing to Westminster during a round robin match on Friday, Pleasant Hill needed a straight-set win against Perryville to extend its season. It came through with a 25-20, 25-21 victory.
“The girls were really focused,” Pleasant Hill coach George Creason said. “They knew coming in that even with their backs against the wall, they still controlled their own destiny. So they actually came out with a real positive attitude and played some of their best volleyball of the season.”
A repeat performance in today’s final may do the trick against Westminster.
Pleasant Hill led Westminster in both sets Friday before a series of unforced errors allowed the match to slip away, Creason said.
“We know if that if we come out and play our best, we match up pretty well with them,” Creason said. “We just have to stop making mistakes.”
St. Pius X won’t be making a return trip to the Class 3 championship. The Warriors lost all three round-robin matches Friday and will play Perryville for third place.
