PictureGuy - On this cold night two high school soccer teams were going to be meeting again for a night to remember. Earlier this season, Kansas Cit Christian played a hard game against DeSoto High School and won. This time, DeSoto was out not to let it happen again as KCCS has done in years past. In the first half,KCCS dominated the offense as good as DeSoto dominated the defenses, which left it the score tied at 0-0 as the first half ended. In the second half, DeSoto came out faster & more aggressive. with less than 12 minutes left, DeSoto scored when the ball when throug the KCCS goalie's hand, hit the bar & went in & scored the first goal for DeSoto. Then, with less than 2 minutes left in the game, DeSoto headered the ball past the backup goalie & scored, making the final score DeSoto 2 - KCCS 0.
This was the first time in over 8, maybe 9 years, KCCS has not gone to State Soccer. KCCS has played against DeSoto in years past and continued to go to State and win. This year, it is DeSoto's turn. Congratulations to both teams for a good game & to DeSoto for winning the KSHSAA Regionals --- Next stop -- STATE!

PictureGuy - WOW! What a game! Johnson County Community College took on Garden City Community College who is ranked #9 in the NATION. The offense from both teams was played like a pro game. Passing, crossing, high headers & more! The offense of Garden City shot at least 15 shots at the JCCC Goal, making 1 goal. However, the JCCC Cavilers played their best game of the year stepping up keeping up with Garden City making 3 goals. The Cavaliers team did a major upset beating Garden City 3-1 & must keep up with the same intense playing as they did in this game to get to the NJCAA National Championship! As good as Garden City is-- it may be possible for these 2 teams to meet again. If that happens, it will be an intense game, just like this one was. If not, if JCCC keeps up all the upcoming teams with the same intensity, it is very possible JCCC may be going to the National Championship & maybe even being the NJCAA Champions, but only time will tell.

PictureGuy - The KCCS Panther Seniors lead their team over the Piper Pirates in this soccer game. In some of the previous games played this year, the KCCS Panthers played as "ball-hogs", instead of a team. In those games, they lost. In tonight's game; they played as a team. In past games a player would try to be the hero. In this game, the ball was passed to everyone. KCCS Senior Midfielder Nate Wolfe and Chris Sojka both scored two goals each in the first half of this game making it 4-0 at half time. The KCCS Offense kept the ball most of the time during the first half by passing short kicks to each other. The Piper defense was able to take the ball away but the Panthers would steal it right back. At half time the Piper Pirates came out a more aggressive team taking the ball & almost scoring twice. Goalie Collin Cook & the Piper defense stopped the Panthers from scoring at all in the second half. Instead of waiting for the ball, Pirates Goalie Collin Cook made some nice saves jumping to block the ball & also sliding in to get the ball before the Panthers could finish scoring. The second half has to go out to the Pirates for good defense & stopping the Panthers. Just like Logan Davis & Coolin Friesen stopped Jared Shiver from scoring with a fast break away in the second period. The Panthers offense played like past Panther Teams who have gone to state. If the Panthers can continue doing the offense & defense they showed tonight--the Panthers may be hard to stop.

PictureGuy - For the last 9 years, Pembroke Hill has been close many times, but has not been able to win this soccer tournament....until now. After 3 hard games, The Pembroke Hill Raiders won the championship of The Kansas City Classic Soccer Tournament 2009. As Coach Pritchett stated "it has been a long time but these kids earned it." This year the Pembroke Raiders have 11 Seniors on their varsity team & this team can run & pass. In this tournament; Pembroke Senior Raider #14, Ross Payne, made 9 goals in 3 games! With the fast passing of his team mates, Ross moves up & cuts the defensive player & hits the far corner away from the goalie. This team, if they have no injuries & continue to play as a team as they did in this tournament---- they may be a hard team to stop. There's still a lot of games left & only time will tell. However, with the teamwork shown at this tournament, The Pembroke Raiders may be like Kansas City Christian, Wichita Trinity, Rosehill, Independence, St. Thomas Aquantis and other top high school soccer teams have been in past years -- hard to beat!

Volleyball Season 2009

ndorsey - 4. Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas)
Last year's record: 38-5; 2008 final ranking: 73

The 2008 Kansas 5A state champions might be the best team in the country and will get the chance to prove it versus the likes of Sacred Heart and St. Louis St. Joseph’s at the St. Joseph’s Tournament of Champions on Sept. 19. The Stags graduated only one from last year’s squad, PrepVolleyball.com All American setter Kate Van Dyke, but has reloaded at the position with the transfer of junior setter Liz Powell. Powell, along with powerful middle Grace Whitley, left St. Teresa’s and crossed state lines to play for Miege. They join club teammate Shelby Workman, giving Miege three from the national champion KC Power 16-1 squad. Add senior middle Jessica Elley (Appalachian State), MB Adri Maurer (Nebraska for basketball), defenders Laura Skaggs and Leslie Starks and sophomore OH Anna Church and it’s easy to see why no one in Kansas City thinks they will be able to stay on the court with Gwenn Pike’s team in 2009.

17. St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kansas)
Last year's record: 33-8; 2008 final ranking: 139

If any team is going to challenge Bishop Miege in Kansas in 2009, it’s going to be St. Thomas Aquinas, which returns the core of the team that fell to Miege in the Kansas 5A final a year ago. Among the returnees are physical middle Kelsey Sullivan, the team’s emotional leader; setter Margaret Clark, who recently committed to Auburn; outsides Liz Gohde and Lauren Ford, who should form the best left-side duo in the state; and lefty RS Megan Spencer, a key player on the MAVS team that finished second nationally this summer in 15 Open. Aquinas is always known for its defense and coaches Brian Schenk and Kim Bogart have two exceptional back row players this year in libero Megan Baska and DS Jenna Lewis. How good will the Saints be in 2009? Circle Sept. 12 on your calendar. That’s when all the top teams in Kansas City will gather on the Missouri side for the Lee’s Summit West MO/KAN Invite.

56. St. James (Lenexa, Kansas)
Last year's record: 45-1; 2008 final ranking: 4

The defending Kansas 4A champs graduated a ton of talent, including PrepVolleyball All Americans Kelly Kolich and Rachel Gray, but coach Nancy Dorsey is in the midst of building a dynasty in Lenexa, a team that competes for state titles every year, just like her alma mater, Chicago’s Mother McAuley. It doesn’t hurt that the Kansas City area is experiencing a golden age in girls’ volleyball. For 2008, the Thunder return senior setter Lauren Brown, who runs a 5-1 in club for MAVS, but will probably set a 6-2 with talented sister Paige Brown so that she can contribute with her swing as well. Other big hitters for coach Dorsey include Hanna Forst, who was an important part of KC Power 16-1’s national championship team; hard hitting OH Morgan Voorhes and 6-1 sophomore Katie Dulek, who puts up a big block. Sophomore Dallas Gardner, who can hit or set, is another future star to keep an eye on for 2009. Defensively, the Thunder should be very strong, with sophomore Sheridan Zarda holding down the libero spot and Annie Reilly showing off her passing platform either from the left side or in the back row.

58. Lee's Summit West (Lee's Summit, Missouri)
Last year's record: 38-2-1; 2008 final ranking: 56

The Titans said “goodbye” to terrific middle Jessica Kopp, the team’s emotional leader, as well as three others who started for at least three years, but coach Mark Rice’s bunch could find its way back to the Missouri Class 4 title match for the third straight year, behind some seasoned veterans and a group of competitive newcomers that have been competing in practice the past two years. Leading the way will be senior OH Paige Vanderpool, a three-year starter and emerging terminal attacker who led the team in aces in 2008. The Titans also boast a very strong junior class, led by setters Kaitlyn Drawe and Kylie Rice, who may both also hit as part of a 6-2 offense. Tall middle Haylee Gregory could be a force in the middle for LSW along with 6-2 sophomore Megan McGehee, who was a key cog in MAVS’ run to the 15 Open championship match at JOs last summer.

79. Archbishop O’Hara (Kansas City, Missouri)
Last year's record: 33-4-5; 2008 final ranking: 249

It’s about time that the Celtics got some respect nationally and in the Kansas City area for that matter. Yes, Missouri Class 4 is more competitive, but O’Hara, which has won the past two Class 3 titles, can play and beat any team regardless of class. All seven starters return for Lori Hanaway’s team, including the fearsome middle tandem of Tori Hurtt and Michala Boehm, two of the most athletic players in the state. Junior Lindsey Hanaway, Second Team All State a year ago, is back to get the ball to her middles, as well as senior Jordyn Wyatt on the right and Janell Jordan and Emily Tyler on the left. Senior Katie Huber, one of the best liberos in the state, will hold down the back row.

CoachingPower - It was recently brought to my attention that basketball in Kansas area is starting to make a fundamental shift in how the game is coached. I just wanted to throw my few cents in; the motion game is becoming more and more popular but coaches have a hard time teaching it and unless it is taught correctly it can do more harm then good. Thus, I am making a push for the return of the fundamental drive for the continuity offenses such as the flex, shuffle, and pick & roll.

If you a coach I'd love to hear your opinion on this. Also, if your looking for a great continuity resource you might check out Coach Mac's Monster Flex series at http://www.coachmac-basketball.com. I bought his monster flex for $10 and discovered it was well worth it. I believe he has other offensive series, but I can only speak to the flex.

Bring back the fundamentals of the game!

PictureGuy - On Friday, KCCS beat Silver Lake 63-53 and Rossville beat Rock Creek 62-55, with scores similar to each other, everyone thought that the Saturday's KSHSAA 3A Championship Game, it was going to be a hard hitting, high scoring game. However, it was not that at all. In fact, this was just the oppoisite --- a low scoring game and one of the worst games the KCCS Panthers have played all year.

In the first period, the score was 3-12 in favor of Rossville, by third period 15-31 with a final score of 32-46. In this game, the whole KCCS Panthers team was off. Yet, the night before the Panthers were playing like a top notch basketball team should play. Yet, in this game, it was totally different. In past games, every KCCS player made hard shots look easy, yet in tonight's game those same players missed several easy shots! The Rossville offense got by the Panthers with ease and made shots other past teams often missed.

When the Panthers applied pressure on defense there were a lot of questionable fouls made against the Panthers which seemed one sided for a championship game and allowed Rossville to get a lot of free throws. In all the Panthers had 23 fouls calls vs. 7 on Rossville. Panthers Matt Steadman, Jordan Mehalic, Kevin McElvain, and Garvin Haughey were all off on shots & kept getting fouled in defense. Both Mehalic and Haughey fouled out then Steadman fouled out for the first time this year in the fourth period. However, Rossville Bulldogs Spensor Askren, Trace McDiffett, Mitch Buhler, Sawyor Askren and Matt Buhler, made some great shots in offense, several free throws, and the whole Rossville defense stopped the Panthers from victory which is something very few teams have done this year. Now, next week, in Hutchinson, KS the KSHSAA 3A Basketball State Championship games will be played & The Rossville Bulldogs will be returning in hopes of capturing the KSHSAA Basketball Championship. Congratulations to all teams going to state!

dennydfw - 2008 National High School Freshman of the Year Finalists

Written by John Tawa

Thursday, 08 January 2009

Pennsylvania hitter Mackenzie Kleespies is one of 15 vying for national freshman of the year

Here are the 15 finalists for 2008 National HIGH SCHOOL Freshman of the Year.

Before we reveal the finalists, here’s a little bit about the process: Beginning in September and continuing through last month, I asked coaches across the country to nominate worthy candidates and to supply statistics and a narrative in support.

The requirements were steep: to be considered, a top freshman had to make a “massive” impact on her high school team. "Massive" is a subjective term, but at a minimum required that she be a varsity starter and have stats that were among the team's best. Playing on a team that won a state title, advanced far in the state tournament and/or was nationally ranked was also helpful.

I received more than 150 nominations, from which the 15 finalists were selected. THIS WAS ANOTHER TERRIFIC YEAR FOR FRESHMEN. You could add 10 more names to the list below and suffer very little drop off in quality. Look for those names and others when the Frosh 59 is released later this month.

I want to stress that the recognition is based on HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT in 2008, not future collegiate success. Inclusion here makes you one of the top 15 freshmen in the country, in our estimation, for high school impact. No more, no less.

Soon, we will release the finalists for the Andi Collins Award to the nation’s top senior setter and Schelde National Senior, National Junior and National Sophomore of the Year. Once the finalists are out, I will again solicit input from coaches across the country about who the top player in each class should be. Ultimately, however, I will make the call. I take the process of selecting the winner very seriously. Winners will be announced by January 30.

National Freshman of the Year candidates

Morgan Bergren, 5-11 S, Delta (Muncie, Indiana) – A club hitter, Bergren had never set competitively before the fall season yet helped set the Eagles to a state 3A title. Described as a “gamer,” the highly competitive Bergren grew in the position all season long and by the end of the year played with the poise and control of someone much older. An All County and All Conference performer, Bergren led Delta in assists with more than 1,000. She also led in aces and was second to senior superstar Darcy Dorton in digs.

Madison Bugg, 5-11 OH, Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, North Carolina) – A natural setter, Bugg was needed at outside hitter in 2008 and made the transition expertly, becoming the first freshman in the school’s storied history to amass more than 200 kills and 200 digs in the same season. Her 254 kills led the team while her ace total (98) is the fourth highest single-season mark all time for the Crusaders. An All Conference selection, Bugg and Gibbons were 29-0 before losing to West Henderson in the state 2A final.

Jordan Burgess, 6-0 OH, Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Florida) – Described by legendary coach Randy Dagostino as the best natural passer he has ever coached, Burgess was a force offensively and defensively for the state runner-up Bucs, one of the nation’s most talented young teams. The First Team All County selection led Berkeley in kills with 336 (for a 27-3 team) while adding 283 digs and 41 aces.

Megan Courtney, 6-1 S/RS, Archbishop Alter (Kettering, Ohio) – Alter has produced great collegiate stars like Carrie DeMange and Ali Hausfeld, who led the Knights to back to back state titles in 2002 and 2003, but Alter coach Tina Jasinowski says unabashedly that Courtney will be the best player in school history before she’s through (“She already is the best athlete we’ve ever had play for us,” Jasinowski added). Courtney hit some in a 6-2, but most of the year she set a 5-1 that sent Alter to the championship match in Division II. First Team All District and First Team All GGCL, Courtney led the 21-8 Knights in assists with 710 and was third on the team in digs (250), blocks (82) and kills (132). Courtney was so good at the state tournament that one college assistant remarked that she was the best player in the Division II field. High praise indeed!

Litsa Darby, 5-8 S, Ashley Hall (Charleston, South Carolina) – The setter on the best team in the state of South Carolina, Darby played every point of every match for Ashley Hall, which culminated in a state SCISA 3A title, and she ran the team with the poise and skill of a veteran. First Team All State, All Low Country and a member of two all tournament teams, Darbby amassed more than 1,000 assists in 47 matches in 2008. “Her intensity on the court, her enthusiasm, the way she kept her cool in tight game situations and her leadership puts her above any other freshman that I have seen in the state,” said a rival coach.

Megan Gilbert, 6-0 MB, Tripoli (Iowa) – A very quick middle blocker with tremendous lateral agility, Gilbert led unranked Tripoli back to the spotlight in 2008 with a surprising state title in Class 1A. A strong blocker and threat from antenna to antenna, Gilbert emerged as Tripoli’s go-to player as the season progressed. A great athlete, Gilbert averaged 3.1 kills, 0.8 blocks and 0.6 digs per game in 2008 and was a First Team All State and all state tournament selection.

McKenzie Hart, 5-8 OH, Langdon (North Dakota) – Hart had 15 kills, 23 digs and four aces as Langdon outlasted Dickinson Trinity to win its third Class B title in six years. The freshman, who was promoted to varsity as an eighth grader and played a supporting role in Langdon’s third place finish in 2007, was a prime time performer this season. The All District and all state tournament team performer finished the year with 381 kills, 486 digs and 95 aces while also serving as a primary passer. Very strong and explosive for her age, Hart is good in all phases. “All season long she proved to be a clutch performer for our team,” said coach Rich Olson. “Her passing and defensive numbers rank number one for her age level in our program’s history.”

Brittany Howard, 6-2 OH, Mountain View (California) – First Team All League, Second Team All Area and named Freshman of the Year by the San Jose Mercury-News, Howard averaged four kills per set for one of NorCal’s top teams. She is a good blocker, passer and defender. Her jump serves and back row attacks helped her score in all six rotations. “In addition to her impact with her passing and hitting, she also made a huge impact on our team chemistry,” said coach Jason Trip. “She is a team player and gets her team excited to compete. She is focused and driven, and she makes her teammates better.”

Mackenzie Kleespies, 5-9 OH, Avon Grove (West Grove, Pennsylvania) – One of only two freshmen named to the Pennsylvania All-State team, Kleespies put up huge numbers for a team that finished tied for third in the state AAA tournament. In 42 matches, Kleespies totaled 441 kills (3.8 per set), 276 digs and a school record 89 aces. Said one rival coach: “She is a lot more than numbers. She is contagious! She elevates those who play on the court with her. She is a non stop energy source that revels in the accomplishments of every teammate and expresses this passion with exuberance that is on display to all sighted people as well as the hearing because she communicates this joy. She just cannot contain her passion for the game, for the competition and you can posit that she hopes that play never ends. And she makes it look easy. She personifies the opinion that ‘Great art conceals art.’”

Haley Lawless, 6-2 OH, Seton Catholic (Scottsdale, Arizona) – Lawless teamed with senior Molly Barlow to form a devastating hitting tandem that took Seton Catholic to the state title in Division 4A-II and a national top 100 ranking. Named First Team All State 4A, Lawless averaged 5.65 kills per set (458 total) while also contributing 203 digs and 132 aces. She passed and played defense out of middle back, was a force at the net blocking when needed and scored points front row and back for the state champs.

Paulina Prieto, 6-2 MB, Palmer Trinity (Miami, Florida) – A varsity performer for three years, Prieto is physically mature for a high school freshman and uses her powerhouse frame to impose her will on opposing defenses. A front row player only at this point, the Puerto Rican native had more than 300 kills and 125 blocks for the Class 2A runners up. Named second team all state a year ago as an eighth grader, this All Dade County performer will undoubtedly be a First Team All State selection when the teams are announced later this month.

Matalee Reed, 6-1 MB, Lake Highlands (Dallas, Texas) – Named Texas Newcomer of the Year by LoneStarVolleyball.com as well as All-City and All-Area Newcomer of the Year by the Dallas Morning News, Reed stepped into a starting role for Lake Highlands at the start of the year and was a key cog in the Wildcats’ run to the 5A Final Four. Demonstrating a mature game, Reed totaled 272 kills, 78 blocks, 95 digs and 53 aces in 2008. “She is a hard worker and has a great attitude,” said coach Cory Williams. “I’m looking forward to seeing what she does in the future.”

Lauren Sieckmann, 5-9 S/RS, Marian (Omaha, Nebraska) – Playing on one of the state’s best teams, Sieckmann made an immediate impact as a freshman for the Crusaders. She led the team in assists, was one of three players with more than 200 kills and was second in digs and aces. For her efforts, this do-it-all type of player was named Second Team All Super State and Third Team All Super State by the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star, respectively.

Rebecca Strehlow, 5-11 S/RS, Wilson (Long Beach, California) - After leading her Long Beach Mizuno team to the Junior Olympic 14 Open title during the summer, Strehlow stepped into the starting lineup for the Bruins in the fall and helped guide Wilson to a perennial spot in the national top 25. A smart player and great athlete, Strehlow amassed 547 assists, 133 kills, 50 aces and 207 digs for a 28-4 team. “The fact is, most freshmen do not stand up to the challenge of suddenly playing with AND against much older, more experienced players,” said Wilson coach Susan Pescar. “They become cautious, fearful and nervous -- and their game simply falls apart. Many freshmen often feel out of place and downright intimidated! Not Rebecca Strehlow! Rebecca thrived and loved every minute of playing with and against some of the most talented players in the country -- almost all much older than she was!! As talented as she is now, can you just imagine what she will be like next year and the years to follow?”

Shelby Workman, 6-0 RS/S, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) – Workman took over the right side for graduated Gatorade Kansas Player of the Year Kathleen Ludwig and played like a Ludwig clone, leading the Stags to the 5A title in 2008. She finished the year with 315 kills, 100 more than anyone else on the team, while adding 81 blocks, 156 digs and strong serve-receive passing to the cause. She was First Team All State 5A, the only freshman so recognized, and a member of the all state tournament team.
