FALL SPORTS NOTES: Titans celebrate cross country state title; boys soccer playoffs

When the Lee’s Summit West girls cross country team capped its stunning season with a 98-point victory at the Missouri Class 4 state championship, the Titans proved the power of the team. Behind junior Chelsey Phoebus, who finished second behind two-time champion Emily Sisson, three other teammates finished within the top 25. None was more surprising than junior Alex Moase who finished 10th.

“Alex Moase’s top 10 finish is a storybook finish,” coach Jesse Griffin said. “Considering she never broke six minutes in a mile in eighth grade (three) years ago. The state meet’s very high caliber, and I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Harrisonville senior Maksim Korolev won the only individual state title for the Kansas City metro area in the Missouri championships in Jefferson City. Just like the Lee’s Summit West girls, Korolev dominated the Class 3 boys race in 15 minutes, 48 seconds which was 50 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
