The Kearney High School girls cross country team captured its first state championship last Saturday in Jefferson City, winning the Class 3 race and placing four runners within the top 20 finishers. Sophomore Jasmine Edwards led the way with her fourth-place finish in 20 minutes, 20 seconds and earned kudos from her coach.
“(This was) the best race I’ve seen her run,” Bulldogs coach Jeff Roberts said. “I was really impressed.”
Last year was Edwards’ first trip to state, and she earned a respectable all-state finish, but she knew she could improve. Edwards decided to race with the front-runners to avoid getting trapped by the pack and surprised herself with how fast time flew.
