Blue Springs senior Lizzy Wendell nervously chatted with teammate Karyla Middlebrook a few times Thursday as she stood on the auditorium stage at Shawnee Mission South High School midway through the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Challenge Awards Show.

Wendell and Middlebrook were among the five girls finalists for the DiRenna Award, which annually honors the top boys and girls basketball in metropolitan Kansas City.

She didn’t think she was going to win, but Wendell was fidgety nonetheless.

“I was nervous, but I didn’t think I was going to win, because I thought they would tell the winner ahead of time,” Wendell said. “It was exciting to hear my name called.”
