Hey everyone, hope you're doing well. My name is Terez Paylor, and I cover Kansas high school wrestling for The Star. So I thought it would be cool if I popped on here and started a regular blog about - you guessed it - high school wrestling. And what better way to start than with some quick impressions of the Bobcat Classic?

So without further ado...here are five things I think I think.

1. I think Aquinas senior Jacob Nowak has the perfect mindset to take home a top finish at state. The kid trailed Olathe East senior Jake Woten (who is no slouch) in the third period of their championship match at the Husky, but he never lost his cool. Instead, he kept working diligently and tied the match before winning in overtime. Afterward, all Nowak - who is currently undefeated - talked about was needingto get better for state. We'll see, but Jacob's chances are looking good.

2. I think BV Northwest proved the importance of having good senior wrestlers. Despite having two starters out, the Huskies won their home tournament by a relatively comfortable margin, mainly because a large group of seniors wrestled well for them. If they keep this up, they have a chance to make some noise at state.

3. I think Gardner Edgerton senior Greg Curtis probably turned in the most dominating performance of the tournament. Curtis, a 171-pounder, pinned all of his opponents in the first period of each match. No matter who it comes against, that's pretty impressive.

4. I think I'm looking forward to seeing Blue Valley junior Parker Madl and BV Northwest senior Linwood Peoples wrestle again. Madl has beaten Peoples twice this season, and they would have wrestled again in the finals of the 140-pound bracket on Saturday, but BV Northwest coach Tim Serbousek made Peoples forfeit for a disciplinary reason. The good news is that they'll probably face each other at least a couple more times this season.

5. I think that it's going to be difficult for any local team to win a state title this year. Unlike past seasons, where St. Thomas nAquinas and Gardner Edgerton were basically steamrolling the competition, there aren't any Johnson County teams that have the depth to compete with teams like Goddard and Emporia.

Until next week folks...
