Hope everyone is having a good week. Thought I'd hop on here real quick and give you my analysis of Blue Valley's big 31-7 win over Aquinas on Friday.

Five things I think I think (if you didn't know, I'm paying homage to Peter King of CNNSI.com)

1. I think Blue Valley proved it is the best team in the EKL. I know what you're thinking - big shock, right? But after a 29-7 season-opening loss to Manhattan (which is now 5-1), the Tigers have won their last five games in impressive fashion. They still have to beat BV West to clinch an outright league title, but things are looking good for the Tigers.

Just a couple of quick tidbits:

*Tonight's game between BV West and Goddard has been postponed. The teams will play Saturday at 6 p.m. in Goddard.

*The same goes for BV North's game against Maize. The game will now be played at 2 p.m. Saturday in Maize.

If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you’re ready for some Friday night action. But we had some interesting developments last week, so I figured I’d hop on here and do an extended blog that covers all the happenings in week one and what we might expect in week two.

Starting next week, be sure to check back for daily updates on the East Kansas League. I’ll be introducing a new feature –the EKL Player of the Week – and I’ll also be splitting up this notebook throughout the week so more people can check it out.

So without further ado, let's get this show on the road.

If you checked out our annual Johnson County football preview, which came out on Wednesday in the zone edition of your local paper (and I know you did), chances are you saw our list of the top 11 players to watch in Johnson County.

The EKL had four representatives - Bishop Miege receiver Justin McCay, Blue Valley offensive lineman Ryan Miller, St. Thomas Aquinas offensive lineman Jake Morin and St. Thomas Aquinas quarterback Ricky Nachbar.

The thing is, there are other players in the EKL who deserve recognition. So lets show them some love, right here, right now.

It's safe to say that Blue Valley North has been a ground-oriented team for a while.

In coach Jason Jones’ first two seasons at Blue Valley North, he had two "hombres" at running back in Chad Schlotzhauer (who ran for more than 1,700 yards in 2005) and Casey(who ran for more than 2,000 yards in 2006).

The Mustangs ran the ball early and often last season, too. But while BV North was among the EKL's leaders in team rushing, the Mustangs found that its back-by-committee approach wasn't as effective and finished with a 3-7 record.

They won't be big. They won't be fast.

So how does Blue Valley Northwest intend on competing this year? With a big dose of guts and hard work. At least that's the impression I got when I visited their practice on Friday.

Last season, the Huskies rebounded froma dreadful 2006 season (in which they went 3-6, the worst mark in school history) to go 5-4 and finish second in the East Kansas League. Offensively, the Huskies rode quarterback Michael Petersen and running backs Adam Repass-Orduna and Brett Havens, while the defense made enough plays to win. The Huskies' 4-1 league record was impressive, considering they beat St. Thomas Aquinas (which finished 8-4) and an up-and-coming Bishop Miege team.
